Abstract
Improvement of the properties of alloyed cast iron exposed to wear and to shocks. White alloyed cast irons are particularly suitable to applications which require a good resistance to abrasion. The predominance of carbides in their microstructure endows them with a high hardness which is necessary to crush other materials without being damaged. The matrix can be adjusted by controlling the concentration of addition elements and by applying (whenever necessary) a heat treatment. The chemical composition regulates the quantity of eutectic and primary carbides and determines their morphology. In this study we consider the possibilities of acting on the microstructure (eutectic and primary carbides matrix). We have made quantitative and qualitative modifications in order to optimise the chemical composition, with the main objective of reducing costly elements (Cr, Mo) and of improving plasticity characteristics by the introduction of Cu, without inducing graphitization. The reduction of these costly element (Cr, Mo) and that of C, with the increase of Mn, sensibly modifies the structural morphology; it also improves the mechanical characteristics of the cast iron and thus enables the choice of the chemical composition of chock-resistant cast-iron.
