Abstract

The high-temperature lherzolite massifs of Ronda, southern Spain, and Beni Bousera, northern Morocco, are ascribed by various authors to sub-continental mantle diapirs emplaced within a granulite metamorphic aureole in continental rifts along transcurrent lithospheric faults. The Collo plagioclase-lherzolite massif, with associated kinzigite and related anatectic rocks, belongs to the same type of geodynamic context. About 17 chromitite bodies are found in the Collo lherzolite massif: their structural, textural and geochemical characteristics are those of chromitite pods that are typical of ophiolite complexes, i.e. of an oceanic lithosphere. The Collo massif is an atypical high-temperature lherzolite massif displaying both continental and oceanic characteristics. It could correspond to a mantle intrusion in a transition zone from continental- to oceanic-rift type.
