A pulse polarographic method is described for determining traces of indium in cadmium and its compounds. As the cadmium matrix interferes, indium is previously separated by two successive homogeneous coprecipitations with Al(OH)3 at pH 5, 90°C, using urea as a hydrolytic reagent. A quantitative recovery of indium is obtained. A HCl + HBr mixture is used as supporting electrolyte, which allows to detect 4×10−8 M indium in the presence of an excess of both lead and cadmium. As little as 0.004 ppm of indium can be detected in a sample weight of 10 g and an end volume of 10 ml. A number of analyses have been performed with synthetic and various commercially available cadmium samples.
