Abstract

This paper reviews the instruments and techniques currently and recently in use for investigations of the magnetic properties of rocks. Although some earlier methods are described, it is chiefly concerned with developments during the last decade involving both new equipment and methods as well as the improvement of earlier instrumentation through the application of modern materials and electronic devices. It is not intended as a manual for the construction of paleomagnetic or rock magnetic equipment, nor as a source of practical details of techniques, but rather as an account of what has been or can be done and as a guide to the literature for both current and would‐be workers in the field.
