<ce:para id="par0005">The soil has for many decades been recognized as a source of nutrients which governs the productivity, vigour and chemical composition of the plants which are growing on it. By the mid-nineteenth century livestock farmers who had settled on new lands realized that animals restricted to feeding on plants in certain areas were often unthrifty or diseased. With these observations and the development of modern analytical technology the knowledge of the importance of soil characteristics in determining the nutritional value of plants has grown rapidly.</ce:para>
<ce:para id="par0010">This book provides a brief, very readable historical perspective on the development of soil-plant-animal interactions in North America, particularly the United States. The authors have been involved in many aspects of research and teaching associated with the material covered in this book. This background knowledge adds greatly to explanations of variations in plant nutritional quality found by various researchers. It also permits the use of illuminating examples when concepts interrelating the soil-plant-animal triad are discussed.</ce:para>
<ce:para id="par0015">Chapters on calcium and phosphorus, iodine and fluorine, copper and molybdenum, cobalt and selenium serve to illustrate specific problems of deficiency or toxicity in the animal or human consuming the plants grown on soils where these problems exist. Selected references at the end of each chapter will be of particular benefit to the reader desiring further background information.</ce:para>
<ce:para id="par0020">The treatment of the influence of soils on the nutritive value of plants is not by any means exhaustive. For example very little mention is made of the problems associated with lateritic soils in the tropics. The question of pollutants and heavy metal accumulation in soils and plants is also mentioned only briefly. However, the book was not intended to be all encompassing. The purposes for which it was apparently produced were as a supplement to more basic texts in several areas of food production as well as to provide an overview of many of the important questions which interrelate soils, plants and animals including the human. For the student and for the researcher working on one particular link of the food chain it will serve these purposes admirably.</ce:para>
