Abstract

Development and growth of the cereal weevils of Sitophilus zeamais, S. oryzae, S. granarius and of S. linearis on non-cereal foods (acorn, chestnut, buckwheat, tamarind and split pea) are compared with performances on soft wheat. It shows the adaptability of cereal weevils to different seeds, and the high performances on chestnuts and acorns. Tamarind weevil which has no symbiotes did not breed on cereals. The alimentary spectrum is compared with that of the whole genus Sitophilus and discussed. The cross influence of food quality and symbiote number is investigated, showing the influence of food on development and the high variability of symbiote number (from 40,000 to 120,000 per ovary).
