Abstract

Abstract: Combined field observations and petrological evidence from the Taznakht block, in the Anti-Atlas, Morocco, have led to a new stratigraphic classification of the Precambrian, applicable in the other Precambrian blocks in the Anti-Atlas and High Atlas as well. Lithostratigraphic and geochronological correlations made between Precambrian formations in the different blocks, have allowed to propose a plate tectonic model explaining the Panafrican Orogeny in the Atlas by the opening and closing of an ensialic marginal basin associated with southward subduction of an oceanic plate below the northern edge of the West-African craton.
