The idea of the Goldschmidt conferences appeared in 1983, when members of the Geological Society of America stated that geochemistry could never be better recognized as a disciplin, though it widely contributed to major discoveries in geological sciences, without identified events, such as an annual meeting specifically for geochemistry.

It required 5 years to evolve from a wish to a reality, and the first Goldschmidt conference was held in 1988 in Baltimore. The members of the committee in charge of organizing the event found it was a good idea to celebrate the upcoming centennial of Viktor Moritz Goldschmidt’s birth in 1888 : the Goldschmidt conferences were born[1].
