- Hyperthionic (tih): having a thionic horizon starting within 100 cm of the soil surface and having a pH (1:1 in water) less than 3.5.
- Orthothionic (tio): having a thionic horizon starting within 100 cm of the soil surface and having a pH (1:1 in water) between 3.5 and 4.0.
- Protothionic (tip): having a layer with sulphidic material, 15 cm or more thick, starting within 100 cm of the soil surface.
