An histosol (HS) can be defined through :

  • a histic or folic horizon
    • 10 cm or more thick from the soil surface to a lithic or paralithic contact
    • 40 cm or more thick and starting within 30 cm from the soil surface

and :

  • the lack of an andic or vitric horizon starting within 30 cm from the soil surface
