Abstract

For nearly two years, at the request of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the consulting firm of ICF, Inc., conducted an extensive study on the changing impact of communications technologies on the economic structure of the U.S. More specifically, the study was designed to assess the reliability and validity of BLS assumptions about employment growth into the 1990's. This paper traces the study's approach and overall findings and concludes that employment growth in communications will not exceed the national average, and may fall short of it due to rising productivity and import penetration.
