Abstract
The urban technical services are in charge of the maintenance and the renovation of the road network, with respect to the interests of the city. That is a difficult task which appeals to much expert knowledge and much information, not always available. In this paper, we present the broad outline concerning an expert system for decision making in the field of urban road maintenance, designed for assisting the specialist in planning the list of streets to be repaired. It results from a cooperation between the Municipality and the Computer Science Research Center in Nancy. After an introduction about expert systems and the present problem, we describe the context of the study, the knowledge involved, the global architecture of the system. We then describe the present state of the project, especially the road diagnostic task.
