Abstract
In this paper we discuss the synchronous bandwidth allocation of FDDI when it is used for transmitting periodic and aperiodic traffics and evaluate its performance. The periodic traffic is assumed under deadline constraint. We consider the realistic case in which a message (a MAC layer PDU) can not be split into small chunks to be transmit and each FDDI station can contain more than one synchronous message streams with different periods. The known analytic results obtained under other assumptions can no longer be directly used. We propose to study the schedulability of the synchronous message sets and the average breakdown utilisation by means of simulation. The main contribution of this paper consists in adding a local scheduling mechanism to each FDDI station, leading to consequent performance improvement.
