Abstract
No single mechanism can be expected to give optimal retrieval in all cases and many problems have been reported concerning the difficulty of making unique choice at the design stage of information retrieval systems\,(IRS). This paper presents a flexible model of information retrieval process together with a mechanism for exploiting need typologies in order to define adequate use of the proposed model. The proposed model integrates in a single framework various alternatives for information retrieval\,(IR) primitives and users feedback in the retrieval process. We study the adequacy of this model to the retrieval of multimedia documents namely pictures and video documents. A facet-based model is used to represent multimedia documents and queries. This rather simple model is nevertheless well exploited by the proposed flexible IR model which takes benefits from the faceted structure all along the search process.
