Abstract

A major problem of distributed multimedia applications is their high demand on processing power of computer systems and transmission capability of interconnecting network. Distributed computing environments are characterized by change : heterogeneous endsystems and Quality of Service parameters may be subject to different fluctuations. Such changes present new challenges for all distributed systems services and in particular for distributed systems platforms. So there is currently considerable interest in developing architectures to flexibly interconnect distributed multimedia applications. Many multimedia services systems and support platforms have been proposed. This paper presents a survey on multimedia applications and distributed environments research in order to assess its contribution to providing both : requirements for future distributed environments and support platforms for distributed multimedia applications. This paper derives an analysis of different aspects of investigations in the area of distributed multimedia systems. Also, it presents a global view at the requirements that these new applications impose for distributed environment.
