Abstract

In this paper we attempt to obtain a syntactical understanding of novelty in the realm of the first-order clausal logic and to give several methods for its operationalization. We shall be interested in incorporating sentences issued from generalization of examples and contreexamples into first-order theories. We shall be concerned with new facts with respect to two types of models\, : first-order models and minimal ones. This preference stems from the fact that these two classes of models provide a natural setting for learning since they specify almost everything about the ``real world'' of the first-order theories.
