Abstract
Inthe same way that five years ago the Internet boomed because of the power of distributed information, we are now witnessing a boom in distributed software. Downloadable software embedded into web pages forms a chea p and low-maintenance solution to the distribution needs of an increasing number of companies. So far there has been no real movement to combine the benefits of both hypermedia and distributed software. This is not a purely esoteric failling. To engineer software purely in a language such as Java, that runs inside a browser, is a staggering duplication of effort. For example; the browser is using display logic to display an applet which in turn has its own display logic implemented. Many embedded software applets simply pop-up a whole new application window and start from scratch with their interaction model, when a highly functional browser, and more importantly a richly dynamic hypermedia resource, are available. This paper describes in more details the problems of the current state of the art, before considering models for hypermedia applications which address these concerns. Confronting these problems means producing applications which consolidate their functionality with the hypertext for display in a browser is one pratical step achievable with current technology.
