Abstract

This experiment in the application of the MicroSoft Author SGML program to ARD (Action de recherche et développement) and AID (Actions initiées sur demande) documents, bears both on the organization of R&D D output and on the production of structured documents using SGML. The program is made up of two parts : - the first part is autonomous, and starting with a Word model (style-sheet) and an SGML model (Document Type Definition, DTD) allows the creation of a set of associations and correspondences between the two models ; - the second part, coupled with the MicroSoft Word 6 word-processor, allows the direct production of structured SGML documents using the associations previously established between the styles and SGML elements ; using the same associations, it is also possible to read SGML documents in Word 6. Just as the first part falls into the province of document architecture, involving at it does the creation of the Word and SGML models, so the second part is accessible to the writers of documents. If writers produce Word documents in accordance with the prescribed models, they can also produce standard SGML documents. This program will therefore allow the production of SGML documents "at source", through Word, avoiding the sometimes burdensome chains of successive conversion, and the use of restrictive structured editors. It should however be said that the Word-Author couple does not form a structured editor. There is no dynamic verification of the document's conformity with the model. This verification only takes place when the document is saved in SGML form. Experimental application to ARD/AID demonstrates the interest of the procedure. In addition to ARD/AID documents, the program is capable of dealing with more complex objects such as references, tables, equations and graphics. This extends even further the program's field of application.
