Abstract

The development of a multimodal surgical simulation is a very complex and challenging task. A typical surgical simulation involves several components such as physics engine, visual engine, haptic rendering etc. Since different modalities and user interactions introduce real-time constraints, the software framework has to optimize both the hardware and software resources to achieve high performance. In this work, we introduce a resource management tool that was built into our Software Framework for Multimodal Interactive Simulations (SoFMIS™) [1] to adaptively manage computational resources at run-time for varying loads. We present several benchmark test results to validate and demonstrate the capabilities of the resource management tool. Our results show that our framework successfully utilized the hardware resources and improved the performance of the overall simulation under varying computational load.
