Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the most desirable ratio of the field of view of a tactile display against the size of target. Seven sighted and five congenitally blind subjects discriminated twelve icons by touch using the Optacon. The patterns of the subjects in using the three magnification settings on the vibrotactile display were recorded during the haptic exploration and analyzed. The best ratio used in the experiment seemed to be 1:2. Users tend not to use the larger cursor window, which set the ratio at 1:1 and caused the presentation of images in lower resolution. No significant difference in the performances between the sighted and blind subjects could be found.
