Abstract

The present study attempted to maximize the efficacy of time delay of multistimulus distinctive-feature cues so that reliable and errorless discrimination learning could be attained. Consideration was given to the static and dynamic nature of the cues, the number of transfer requirements, and the exact response loci. The study consisted of three experiments. Consistent errorless learning was achieved only when (a) dynamic cues were used and (b) subjects were already pretrained to respond to the compound stimuli. Moreover, the data suggest that the efficacy of time delay was an inverse function of the mass of extraneous materials used for cueing. Finally, subjects who learned the task consistently pointed to the distinctive element of the S + whereas subjects who did not learn typically pointed to the center or nondistinctive elements of the S +.
