<title>Open question</title>
<p id="Par2">China's recent SARS outbreak put the spotlight on the nation's scientists. Many labs cast their usual work aside to tackle SARS biochemistry, epidemiology and immunology. Chinese scientists continue to publish important work in the field, which is good news for the global response to any infectious diseases newly emerging from Asia. But will the government foster the openness that such responses need?</p>
