<meta-value>7 News ReviewSARS has returned SAGE Publications, Inc.2004DOI: 10.1177/14690446040050010203 The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Chinese Ministry of Health have confirmed two new cases of suspected SARS infection. The first of which sparked a cull of 10,000 civet cats by Chinese authorities. A 32-year-old television producer in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou was the first victim, though he has now recovered. The second – a 20-year-old waitress from the southern Guangdong province was hospitalised at the end of December. Health officials are trying to discover the source of the disease. The waitress report- edly worked at a restaurant, which may have served these racoon-like civets to customers. In the Guangdong province, such animals are bred as delicacies. The first case is proving difficult to source because the man was almost com- pletely vegetarian, eating fish, eggs and vegetables – and having no known con- tact with civets. Though there is a possible link with rodents – the man was thought to have handled a rat prior to becoming ill. The WHO condemned the culling of the civets as potentially increasing the spread of the disease, as well as destroying the evidence of the origins of the SARS virus. WHO spokeswoman Maria Cheng said: `It's encouraging that Chinese officials are acknowledging wildlife as a possible reser- voir for SARS, but SARS coronavirus has been identified in other animals.' Bob Dietz, another WHO spokesperson, said that people should not be alarmed: `We seem to be catching cases, so it seems the surveillance system is working.'</meta-value>
