<OtherAbstract Type="PIP" Language="eng"><AbstractText>Ghana's Vice-President, J.E.A. Mills, has stated that the emergence of diseases and the re-emergence of others previously thought to be no longer public health problems pose a great challenge to the government. With an already overburdened government, the occurrence of disease epidemics could undermine national development. In launching World Health Day on April 7, 1997, Mills stressed the need for sensitivity to emerging and re-emerging diseases, as well as the need to effectively respond to their occurrences. The government of Ghana is committed to fighting all diseases and will help the health sector as much as it can. A multisectoral approach is needed to resolve the problem. Mills appealed to all sector ministers, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to help fight AIDS and other diseases, arguing that diseases such as AIDS can destabilize societies. Because of the severe impact such diseases have upon society, district assemblies should make AIDS prevention a priority and provide resources for the anti-AIDS program. The Ministry of Health has advised the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation to step up the purification of pipe-borne water and to chlorinate hand-dug wells for drinking. Comments are also included from Dr. Martin Mandara, WHO representative in Ghana, and Esther L. Nkansah, Western Regional Minister.</AbstractText>
