Beyond the incidence and prevalence sta- tistics that communicate to the world the devastation that HIV infection is wreaking on the populations of sub-Saharan Africa, this article reminds us of the tremendous tolls exacted of individuals connected by love, duty, and kin- ship to those who suffer the illnesses and die of HIV. For it is not only the daily ministrations offered to the loved one sick from AIDS that sit heavily on each caregiver's shoulders but also the responsibility for assuring a respectful funerary process. The findings tell us that these dual commitments are achieved by this sample of Ghanaian caregivers only by fastidious secrecy, even within their own homes. To allow a loved one to become known as a person with AIDS could incite ostracism so deep as to endure beyond death to defile the rituals and remembrances of a life lived. Such ramifications from AIDS stigma are staggering and call for nothing less than all-out efforts to eradicate stigma against those infected and affected by HIV. Stigma isolates AIDS caregivers, keeps individuals from getting HIV testing, shames people who are HIVinfected so badly that they dare not seek health care, and makes AIDS unspeakable in the halls of gov- ernment. Radical collective action is necessary to pull out by its roots a force so powerful. In rural villages and national capitals, among local community members and international professional organizations, within funding agen- cies and courts of law, nurses and our allies must work to make change. The researchers in this case went the extra mile, making considerable and extended personal efforts to provide fiscal and emotional support to AIDS caregivers. They engaged colleagues, nongovernmental organizations, and their academic institutions to sustain this support through time. Nurses in solidarity with each other across the world can bring pressure to bear and make a difference. Studies such as Mwinituo and Mill's are important. They shake us out of our comfortable seats and challenge us to take a stand.
