Abstract
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors have for a long time received ’bad press’. However, the new selective and reversible MAOIs are associated with considerably reduced risk of untoward side-effects. Margherita Strolin Benedetti and Philippe Dostert review the chemistry and pharmacology of these compounds and describe the roles of functional groups and the asymmetric centres of substrates and reversible MAOIs in differential recognition by the A or B forms of MAO.
