Abstract

The impact of gender discrimination in disasters is one of those topics in Emergency Management that isn't widely known and discussed even less. Women, Gender and Disaster: Global Issues and Initiatives explores the impacts of gender discrimination within the perspective of disaster risk management. The book is composed of 25 writings and case studies from researchers, practitioners and advocates for gender equality in disaster risk management. While recognizing the knowledge, capabilities, leadership and experience women can bring to the table cannot be ignored and should be encouraged, the authors note community resiliency requires the skills, resources and cooperation of both sexes. The book also includes toolkits and checklists to help disaster and emergency planners mainstream gender as a strategy for achieving disaster mitigation and risk reduction.
