Abstract

Launched in 1987, the French National Program for the Conservation of Native Elm Genetic Resources focused on the ex situ conservation of clones of adult Field elms (Ulmus minor Mill.) that survived the DED pandemic. It was later expanded to the in situ dynamic conservation of populations of European white elm (U. laevis Pall.) and wych elm (U. glabra Huds.). The national collection contains 441 clones, some of which have been characterized and evaluated under a European project. The pathological tests and experimental plantations did not identify clones truly resistant to DED but did provide material for the reconstitution of hedgerows. Two Conservatory units of white elm and one of wych elm were selected, enriching the pan-European EUFORGEN network for dynamic conservation of forest genetic resources. This program provides feedback on genetic conservation strategies for forest trees confronted with a health crisis. New partners are invited to exploit the scientific potential of the conservatory and experimental plots.

<p>Launched in 1987, the French National Program for the Conservation of Native Elm Genetic Resources focused on the ex situ conservation of clones of adult Field elms (Ulmus minor Mill.) that survived the DED pandemic. It was later expanded to the in situ dynamic conservation of populations of European white elm (U. laevis Pall.) and wych elm (U. glabra Huds.). The national collection contains 441 clones, some of which have been characterized and evaluated under a European project. The pathological tests and experimental plantations did not identify clones truly resistant to DED but did provide material for the reconstitution of hedgerows. Two Conservatory units of white elm and one of wych elm were selected, enriching the pan-European EUFORGEN network for dynamic conservation of forest genetic resources. This program provides feedback on genetic conservation strategies for forest trees confronted with a health crisis. New partners are invited to exploit the scientific potential of the conservatory and experimental plots.</p>

<p>Lancé en 1987, le programme national de conservation des ressources génétiques des ormes indigènes visait la conservation ex situ de clones d'ormes champêtres adultes rescapés de la pandémie de graphiose. Il a été élargi à la conservation in situ dynamique de populations d'Orme lisse et d'Orme de montagne. La collection nationale contient 441 clones, en partie caractérisés et évalués dans un projet européen. Les tests pathologiques et les plantations expérimentales n'ont pas révélé de véritable résistance à la graphiose mais des clones utilisables pour la reconstitution de haies champêtres. Deux unités conservatoires d'Orme lisse et une d'Orme de montagne ont été sélectionnées, enrichissant le réseau paneuropéen EUFORGEN de conservation dynamique des ressources génétiques forestières. Ce programme livre un retour d'expérience sur les stratégies de conservation des ressources génétiques d'arbres forestiers en situation de crise sanitaire. De nouveaux partenaires sont invités à valoriser le potentiel scientifique des dispositifs conservatoires et expérimentaux.</p>
