<p id="para10">MIDDLE East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is on the move. Last week, Greece, the Philippines and Malaysia identified their first cases of the coronavirus, which emerged in Saudi Arabia in 2012. All could be traced back to the Arabian peninsula, where there is an upsurge in the virus.</p>
<p id="para20">A 69-year-old Greek man who lives in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia,
<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://www.euro.who.int/en/health-topics/communicable-diseases/influenza/news/news/2014/04/mers-cov-update-greece-reports-first-case" id="interrefs10">flew to Athens and was hospitalised with MERS on 17 April</ext-link>
. He may have been infected while visiting a hospital in Jeddah weeks earlier.</p>
<p id="para30">A Filipino male nurse, who had been in contact with a man who died of MERS in Abu Dhabi, was confirmed as being infected with the virus after flying back to the Philippines on 15 April. The man has now cleared the virus from his system and neither he nor any of the other
<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/04/16/14/ofw-uae-tests-positive-mers-cov" id="interrefs20">nine people quarantined</ext-link>
have developed symptoms.</p>
<p id="para40">The Malaysian case involved a 54-year-old man who had just performed the Umrah Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. He flew from Jeddah, where
<ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?p=531623#post531623" id="interrefs30">45 people have caught the virus since March</ext-link>
, and died on 13 April. He was the first known foreign pilgrim to be infected.</p>
