Abstract

Conclusios: ISS induce T cell-independent polyclonal activation of human B cell by engaging surface Ig. Manifestations of ISS-induced human B cell activation include expression of activation markers, proliferation, and Ig production as well as anti-DNA antibody production. IL-2, IL-6 and intact T cells enhanced B cell responses to ISS, but were not required for B cell activation. Human monocytes enhanced B cell responses induced by ISS, particularly Ig secretion. The chemical nature of sODNs capable of stimulating human B cells has not been completely delineated. Further studies will be necessary and important for developing novel therapeutic and preventive agents in humans using ISS.
