<ce:note><ce:simple-para>Preparation of 12-hydroxydodecanoic acid 4,4′-dimethoxytrityl ether: 1 g (4.62 mmol) 12-Hydroxydodecanoic acid was twice co-evaporated with 20 ml of dry pyridine, then dissolved in dry pyridine (20 ml). 1.72 g (5.08 mmol) 4,4′-dimethoxytrityl chloride were added. The reaction mixture was stirred overnight, then quenched with MeOH (5 ml), evaporated, diluted with CH<ce:inf loc="post">2</ce:inf>

(50 ml) and washed with sat. NaHCO<ce:inf loc="post">3</ce:inf>
soln. (50 ml). The layers were separated, and the aqueous phase was back-extracted with CH<ce:inf loc="post">2</ce:inf>
Cl<ce:inf loc="post">2</ce:inf>
(2<ce:italic>x</ce:italic>
25 ml). The combined organ. layers were dried over Na<ce:inf loc="post">2</ce:inf>
SO<ce:inf loc="post">4</ce:inf>
and evaporated. Purification by flash-chromatography (40 g SiO<ce:inf loc="post">2</ce:inf>
) applying a CH<ce:inf loc="post">2</ce:inf>
Cl<ce:inf loc="post">2</ce:inf>
/ 0–4% MeOH gradient containing 1% Et<ce:inf loc="post">3</ce:inf>
N yielded 2.16 g (79%) of an orange-yellow oil. The structure was confirmed by NMR, UV and MS.</ce:simple-para>
