Abstract
Our purpose was to evaluate the results of axillary lymph node transplantation (LNT) with non-contrast magnetic resonance (MR) lymphography in 15 patients with secondary upper limb lymphedema.

Non-contrast MR lymphography was obtained with a free-breathing 3D fast spin-echo sequence. Images analysis criteria included: (A) before surgery: a) severity of lymphedema graded as absent, mild, moderate, and severe; b) involvement of the muscular compartment; c) distal dilated lymphatic vessels; (B) after surgery: a) visualization of site of transplantation; b) visualization of transplanted lymph nodes; c) severity of lymphedema with regard to pretransplantation severity (i.e., improvement, stability, or aggravation). Clinically, circumferential measures were performed at four different levels.</AbstractText><AbstractText Label="RESULTS" NlmCategory="RESULTS">Follow-up MR examinations were performed at least 6 months after LNT, with a longest follow-up time of 42 months. In 2 patients, no lymphedema was visualized before LNT with MR lymphography. In the other 13 patients, lymphedema was mild in 4 patients, moderate in 5 patients, and severe in the other 4 patients. After LNT, an improvement of upper limb lymphedema was observed in 7 of 9 patients with moderate or severe upper limb lymphedema. In the 11 patients in whom comparison of MR lymphography with circumferential measurement was available, evaluations were concordant in 10 cases.</AbstractText><AbstractText Label="CONCLUSIONS" NlmCategory="CONCLUSIONS">Non-contrast MR lymphography may be used as an objective technique to analyze the results of LNT.
