<front><div type="abstract" xml:lang="en"><p><bold>Background:</bold>
Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) lyases have been widely isolated from terrestrial but not marine bacteria.</p>
<p><bold>Results:</bold>
A novel GAG lyase (HCLase) was identified for the first time from a marine bacterium.</p>
<p><bold>Conclusion:</bold>
The HCLase has very low homology to the characterized conventional GAG lyases and possesses very unique biochemical characteristics.</p>
<p><bold>Significance:</bold>
HCLase will be useful for chondroitin sulfate/hyaluronan-related research and applications.</p>
