Abstract
Abstract: The main problem concerns the origin of new influenza strains which cause world-wide epidemics in man. Investigations during the past 20 yr have increasingly pointed to animal reservoirs which provide the possibility for new strains by themselves, or by recombination with human strains, to cause epidemics in human populations. Work on the genetics of influenza strains especially during the past few years has added considerable support to this hypothesis.
