Abstract

Abstract: It is known that a Hall current can be obtained in the presence of a battery. Recently, it was shown that a sort of Hall current can be obtained even in the absence of a battery, by geometrical means. In this paper we show that both kinds of currents, in a sense, stem from a common cause. Moreover, we show that there are two other kinds of Hall currents which stem from the same cause. They exist when the system is inhomogeneous in one direction. We do this by defining a “local” grand canonical potential which turns out to be proportional (at low temperatures) to the Hall current.
