Abstract
Abstract: According to the specific requirements such as the decrease of plutonium-containing liquid waste, the rationalization of the analytical procedure, and the reduce of the personal exposure, new analytical methods for the determination of impurities in (Pu, U)O2 mixed oxide fuels are applied. For the determination of non-metallic impurities an ion Chromatograph with conductivity detection and different separating systems is used. This main advantages of the ion chromatography are that the sample quantities are reduced and no matrix separation is needed any longer. This means a broader range of detection, simultaneous determination of several ions, and shorter analysis time. To determine hydrogen and nitrogen, a carrier gas hot extraction method is applied. The mixed oxide pellets are heated at 2000°C and the released gases are detected on the basis of thermal conductivity. Using this method, the achieved H2 and N2 results are representative and precise. The analysis time is very short and the amount of plutonium waste is small.
