Abstract

Abstract: The origin of H3N2 influenza virus was studied by T1 oligonucleotide mapping of RNA. H2N2 virus strains isolated during the 1967–1968 period had common oligonucleotides which were not found in the virus strains prevalent in 1965 or earlier but were conserved in the early H3N2 virus strain, A/Aichi/2/68. Most of the oligonucleotides of seven genes, except the hemagglutinin gene of A/Aichi/2/68, were present in A/Montevideo/2208/67 (a late H2N2 virus). It was suggested that an H2N2 virus circulating during or shortly before the 1967–1968 period had contributed the seven genes to H3N2 virus in the reassortment event with an H3-containing virus.
