Abstract
Missing teeth, whether, congenitally absent or lost through trauma or caries may lead to reduced friction, poor aesthetics or distress to the patient. A variety of methods have therefore been developed to replace the missing dentition with bridgework or dentures. The method chosen for replacement should be tailored towards the individual patient as far as possible. In this article, the first in a series, the author provides guidelines as to how this should be done.
