Abstract
A paucity of information is available regarding orthognathic surgery for edentulous patients. Surgical complications have been described but have mainly been related to alveolar bone augmentation for implant placement and preprosthetic surgery.1 Negligible information is available regarding the bilateral sagittal split osteotomy for the edentulous mandible or bimaxillary edentulous surgical techniques. The present edentulous patient had lacrimoauriculo-dentodigital syndrome (LADD), or Levy-Hollister syndrome, a rare genetic condition first described by Hollister et al in 1973.2 LADD is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by various anomalies2 that may result in edentulism. The characteristics of this syndrome might have been responsible for the peculiarities noted during this patient's bimaxillary osteotomy. Aspects of LADD syndrome in relation to preoperative planning, orthognathic surgery, and postoperative phases are considered.
