Abstract

4. Summary: 1. The skull ofOphicephalus is redescribed using current nomenclature. 2. The hyobranchial skeleton has been completely described. The hyoid cornu consists of a median basihyal, paired hypo-, cerato-, epi- and stylohyals. Cartilaginous interconnections exist between these elements. While the pharyngobranch of the first branchial arch inOphicephalus striatus, O. punctatus andO. marulius is continuous with its epibranch, inO. gachua it is free. The pharyngobranchs of the third and fourth arches are united. 3. The differences in the hyobranchial skeleton of the four species ofOphicephalus, viz.,striatus, punctatus, marulius andgachua have been noted to be of classificatory importance. The dentigerous patches (gill rakers) distributed on the hyobranchial skeleton show variation in the species ofOphicephalus studied.
