Abstract
Kurzfassung: Zwei Arten des DicynodontenDinodontosaurus aus der Mitteltrias der Santa Maria Formation in Rio Grande do Sul (Südbrasilien),D. tener (von Huene 1935) undD. turpior (von Huene 1935), basieren auf nicht-diagnostischen Lectotypen und sind daher Nomina dubia. Der älteste valide verfügbare Name einer Art der GattungDinodontosaurus istD. oliveirai Romer 1943, die Typusart.Chanaria platyceps Cox 1968 undDinodontosaurus brevirostris Cox 1968 sind jüngere subjektive Synonyme vonD. oliveirai Romer 1943.Dinodontosaurus ist daher eine monospezifische Gattung, die nur aus der Santa Maria Formation und aus der Ischichuca (= Chañares) Formation des nordwestlichen Argentinien bekannt ist. Dieser Dicynodonte und die assoziierte Tetrapodenfauna charakterisieren den Chanarian Landwirbeltiere-Faunenchron mit einem triassischen, wahrscheinlich ladinischen Alter.
