Abstract
Summary: A historical survey of the evolution of the treatment of temporo-mandibular ankylosis is briefly outlined. Important features in the ˦tiology have been discussed. The case histories of six patients suffering from ankylosis are presented, and the results of a bilateral operative procedure on five of them are described. The following points are considered important:-1.The operative procedure presented is technically easy, and whilst not being claimed as original, is sufficiently novel and satisfactory to warrant publication.2.Reports on the use of bovine cartilage to prevent reunion do not appear to have been published previously.3.The use of a dental bur is advocated because of the ease and accuracy with which the bone may be divided by this instrument.4.Caution in the removal of teeth in the immediate post-operative period is advised
