Certainly, the field is at present largely unexplored and offering many areas open to investigation. One of the most encouraging features of all this is that while the debate on the value of dental health education has continued, the dental health of the nation has improved remarkably. In fact, the drop in prevalence of dental decay in children is so dramatic as to be eligible for the title of the greatest health achievement of the last decade. Some say this is due entirely to the advent of fluoride toothpaste, and there is no denying that this played a part. 'Ring of Confidence' However, the 'ring of confidence' is hardly likely to have reduced the level of edentulous- ness in the middle-aged population, or to have achieved the remarkable improvements in attitudes of adults to tooth loss. Whatever the causes (and there are likely to be several), parents have to put toothpaste in their children's mouths or to give them fluoride tablets before they can be effective; adults have to regard dental health as important before they will be prepared to take the trouble to maintain their own, and our political representatives will need to feel that the public are behind them before they will introduce important public health measures like fluoridation. Thus, in the end it all comes down to a better informed public, and what else apart from health education will effect that? Dental health workers stand alongside their colleagues in health education in their primary task of trying to help people to help themselves.
