Abstract
This article examines the contemporary appearance of plastic teeth, a disease of infants and children, among the Haya of northwest Tanzania. It relates the symptoms to the cultural symbolism of bodily processes and conditions, and further grounds those processes in broad transformations in the Haya political economy. This assessment of a particular affliction specifically attempts to assess the meaningful and symbolic nature of commodities and commoditization as intimate, experiential aspects of rapid social change.
