<p>Acute‐phase proteins (<styled-content style="fixed-case">APP</styled-content>
s) are sensitive markers of inflammation, and serum C‐reactive protein (<styled-content style="fixed-case">CRP</styled-content>
) recently has been shown to be a useful diagnostic marker in dogs with bacterial pneumonia (<styled-content style="fixed-case">BP</styled-content>
). In humans with community‐acquired pneumonia, <styled-content style="fixed-case">APP</styled-content>
s also have great utility as follow‐up markers aiding in the assessment of treatment response.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="jvim14631-sec-0002"><title>Objectives</title>
<p>The aim of our study was to investigate the applicability of <styled-content style="fixed-case">APP</styled-content>
s as markers of treatment response in dogs with <styled-content style="fixed-case">BP</styled-content>
.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="jvim14631-sec-0003"><title>Animals</title>
<p>Nineteen dogs diagnosed with <styled-content style="fixed-case">BP</styled-content>
and 64 healthy dogs.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="jvim14631-sec-0004"><title>Methods</title>
<p>The study was conducted as a prospective longitudinal observational study. Serum <styled-content style="fixed-case">CRP</styled-content>
, serum amyloid A (<styled-content style="fixed-case">SAA</styled-content>
), and haptoglobin concentrations were followed during a natural course of <styled-content style="fixed-case">BP</styled-content>
. Normalization of serum <styled-content style="fixed-case">CRP</styled-content>
was used to guide the duration of antibiotic treatment (treatment was stopped 5–7 days after <styled-content style="fixed-case">CRP</styled-content>
normalized) in 8 of 17 dogs surviving to discharge; 9 of 17 dogs were treated according to conventional recommendations.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="jvim14631-sec-0005"><title>Results</title>
<p>All measured <styled-content style="fixed-case">APP</styled-content>
s initially were significantly increased, but the magnitude of increase was not correlated to disease severity. C‐reactive protein and <styled-content style="fixed-case">SAA</styled-content>
concentrations decreased rapidly after initiation of antimicrobial treatment. When normalization of serum <styled-content style="fixed-case">CRP</styled-content>
was used to guide the duration of antibiotic treatment, treatment duration was significantly (<italic>P</italic>
= .015) decreased without increasing the number of relapses.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="jvim14631-sec-0006"><title>Conclusions and Clinical Importance</title>
<p>Serum <styled-content style="fixed-case">CRP</styled-content>
and <styled-content style="fixed-case">SAA</styled-content>
reflected the recovery process well and therefore may be used as markers of treatment response. According to the results, the normalization of serum <styled-content style="fixed-case">CRP</styled-content>
may be used to guide the duration of antibiotic treatment in dogs with <styled-content style="fixed-case">BP</styled-content>
.</p>
