Abstract
This paper explores the dilemmas of conducting research in a setting where one is employed. Using the concept of reciprocity, I describe how trusting relationships with participants were built during a study of an off‐campus doctoral program for school administrators. When trust was threatened, either because of role structures or organizational events, I devised strategies to rebuild it. Two strategies underscored affiliation with students: sharing common experiences and using the personal pronouns we and they, and visiting students at their homes and places of work.
