Abstract

This article reviews psychosocial interventions for antisocial children and their families. Studies were selected if they made use of an adequate experimental or quasi-experimental design, relied on a conceptual model specifying processes associated with the development or maintenance of antisocial behavior, showed that these processes were operating in their sample, and evaluated outcome by relying on multiple measures directly related to these processes or antisocial conduct. Early education, social skills training, cognitive skills training, parent training, and family therapy approaches are reviewed. Results show that few studies meet minimum criteria of scientific acceptability, while those that do are often flawed or limited in the evidence they provide. However, a small number of carefully evaluated programs provide promising evidence that positive changes in antisocial behavior can be brought about at the child and family levels. It is recommended that future studies select and describe treated samples more carefully, seek to demonstrate treatment effectiveness by providing evidence of long-term maintenance and treatment specificity, integrity, and strength, and take ecological and developmental correlates of antisocial behavior into account.
