<meta-value> and adaptable. Although successful therapy results in patients becoming more internal, selective, and conditional in their relational assessments, unsuccessful therapy results in little change. Finally, the authors use masters of different theoreti- cal orientations to show the atheoretical nature of their findings. This is an excellent book with valuable information for both the clinician and the trainer or supervisor. It demystifies what actually happens in successful therapy in a way that can be adapted to any approach to therapy. It gives the reader tools for measuring as well as a greater understanding of the change process we call therapy. Rosemary Giovannone, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist and licensed marital and family therapist in private practice in Deerfield, Illinois, and is adjunct faculty in The Family Insti- tute at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The Family in Global Transition (1997). Gordon L. Ander- son (Ed.), St. Paul, MN: Paragon House, $39.95. Reviewed by J. Edward Lynch The final chapter of this book, Nicholas N. Kittrie's "Pol- icy, Law and Family Stability," ends with "No other existing societal institution can better play a central role in the crystal- lization of individual identity and continue serving as a life-long hub for inter-gender and inter-generational compan- ionship and comradeship than the family" (p. 535). This sen- tence alludes to the scope of this expansive book, as chapters cover the historical, anthropological, and sociological paths of families. The family is traced throughout history as an institution evident in tribal societies, antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the modern era. A discussion of families from Africa, China, India, the Middle East, Latin America, the former Eastern bloc countries, and the West provides a rich background against which families can be viewed from a culturally unique perspective. "Family Change, Family Stability and Public Policy," the third section of this work, introduces topics such as Feminism and the Family, Fatherlessness, Homosexual Households, Race and Gender, and the Future of the Family in an Era of Change. The latter section contains provocative information that can challenge values and beliefs that are likely to shape views held by clinicians, counselors, students, or teachers. It is necessary to digest the facts without judgment--no small task--especially considering such statements as "Premarital pregnancy, out of wedlock childbearing, and absent fathers are the most common predictors of child abuse" (p. 406), or "72% of adolescent murderers grew up without fathers" (p. 406). It is important that all data are considered in the contextof the theoretical tenets of the author of the chapter and to accept these facts with some constructive skepticism. The chapter on the "Decline of the Western Family The- sis" presents a thoughtful picture of a "Review of the Evi- dence of the Decline-of-the-Western Family" (p. 327), in which the rising divorce rate is explored relative to several concepts: age at first marriage, differences between spouses relative to their racial and ethnic backgrounds, religious and social class differences, and the individual and collective goals of the marital relationship. A statement by Spanier and Thompson (1987) provides a backdrop for considering the state of the family in the approaching 21st century: "Divorce is a response to a failing marriage, not a failing situation. The family system can remain strong while divorce rates remain high." In general, this book is a weighty collection of articles that should not be taken separately. Each perspective is a piece of the whole, and the entire work is an elaborated version of a definition of the family and both the common and unique cir- cumstances in which families function. It is a valuable refer- ence and could fill a gap in a professional library where sev- eral other books might be needed. REFERENCE Spanier, G. B., & Thompson, L. (1987). Edward Lynch is the chairperson of the Marriage and Family Therapy Department in the graduate school of Health and Human Services at Southern Connecticut State Univer- sity. He is also the director of the Gestalt Therapy Training Program in the same department. Reviewed by Rose Marie Donoho The Practical Practice of Marriage and Family Therapy is a comprehensive family therapy book for both novice and seasoned therapists.
