Abstract

Towards an anthropological model of psychotherapeutic practice. – Reacting against suggestive but overly approximate comparisons between psychotherapy and ritual activity, the author proposes a number of anthropological perspectives on the practice of therapy. Psychotherapy is envisaged in terms of three embedded relational contexts: the client's and the therapist's participation in their respective social networks, the therapeutic relationship that arises between the therapist and the client, and the various therapeutic procedures that provide the client with the conditions for relational change. The analysis aims to show the ways in which psychotherapy (and systemic therapy in particular) is more complex than what is usually understood as « ritual », « play/game », « spectacle » or « ordinary interaction »: its distinctive form and logic derive from a particular interplay of these different interactive modes.
