Abstract
A series of measures is advocated for the treatment of patients who have been exposed to the noxious effects of nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide or the fumes of nitric acid. The main lines of treatment, in order of priority, are: oxygen therapy to compensate for decreased blood oxygen capacity and content, reconversion of methaemoglobin using methylene blue, and the prevention and treatment of chemical pneumonitis. The use of corticosteroids and antibiotics is recommended in view of the success of previous authors with such treatment. Artificial ventilation by intermittent positive pressure ventilation may be necessary in cases of ventilatory failure. The protective effects of dimercaprol may be tried in severe cases. Correction of the metabolic component of the severe acid-base derangement is advocated.
